We have had a couple of removals lately, a little different from the normal house move and thought we would share some of these with you all.

Firstly, we moved a couple who lived on a boat for over 30 years, this boat was a 78 tonne ex cargo canal boat which had been converted so that the whole of it was liveable, the boat had two floors, its own plot of land and a large outhouse. We started off on day one by sending two men out to do a part pack which mainly involved packing up all of the fragiles on the boat, some specialist procedures had to come into place here to ensure the antique china was packed correctly as well as a few other irreplaceable pictures and family heirlooms.

Due to access being a little awkward and a fairly large volume of items to be moved, we had to send out two Luton’s along with our 18 tonne lorry to load and rally the goods from the boat, to get the larger items of furniture out we had to remove two staircases and pass the items up to the staff members at the top of the boat. After a busy day of loading, we took the loaded vehicles to our indoor locked storage facility and left them secure overnight. The following day the lads went up to the Derbyshire Dales to offload the vehicles into our customers new home, and after a busy offload and taking many boxes of books and magazines up to the third storey, the job was done and we had another happy customer.

Another abnormal day of work recently came up as a result of some extreme weather up in the peak district, our day started as a normal offload from one of our storage units, once loaded, our team made their way up to the customers property and as they got closer and closer the weather was getting worse. As they got to the customers new housing estate, the snow was over a foot deep, the lorry got stuck a couple of times and struggled to get near the customers house. After a lot of digging and clearing the snow and ice, the lorry managed to get moving.

When it came to the drive home, the lorry managed to get as far as 10 minutes away from the customers property before finding a car had ended up coming off the road into a ditch in the snow, a tractor was pulling the car out and a JCB was clearing the road at the same time meaning only one lane of the road was available. Our vehicle ended up waiting around half an hour before they managed to get through by one of the porters getting out and directing the traffic through as and when it was safe to do so.

All was good most of the journey back to the yard, right up until a tree collapsed almost right in front of our team and blocked off both lanes of the road ahead. After notifying the relevant authorities, our team were about to turn around and redirect, until a highway maintenance truck showed up and started cutting up the tree with a chainsaw so our lads started to help with the clearing and managed to get the road clear and get themselves home. A nightmare day but the job got done and definitely one for the storybooks.
